September 21 1929 - Notable Passengers

The EMPRESS OF ASIA, commanded by A. J. Hailey, concluded a Pacific crossing upon reaching Vancouver on September 21st, 1929. The ship reached Victoria 8 hours behind schedule, having been delayed by a Pacific storm. 

The EMPRESS OF ASIA approached Victoria harbour almost simultaneously with the Nippon Yusen Kaisha liner IYO MARU and the American Mail liner President Cleveland.  The EMPRESS OF ASIA boarded Dr. Chester Brown at the William Head Quarantine Station and steaming at full speed managed to outrun the IYO MARU and berth at Rithet Piers first.  Shortly after, the IYO MARU docked at the remaining berth at Rithet Piers while the PRESIDENT CLEVELAND was forced to dock at Pier A at Ogden Point. 

The ship reported a passenger list of consisting of 69 in First Class, 89 in Second Class, 40 in Third Class, and 283 in Steerage.
