August 7 1939 - Notable Passengers

The EMPRESS OF ASIA, commanded by George Goold, concluded a Pacific crossing upon reaching Vancouver on August 7th, 1939.  

On August 9th 1939 the DUCHESS OF RICHMOND, an Atlantic based Canadian Pacific Steamship, made fast along side the EMPRESS OF ASIA at the Canadian Pacific pier in Vancouver.  The DUCHESS OF RICHMOND was making a rare cruise to the Pacific Ocean that included visits to Alaska, Hawaii, British Columbia, California, and Mexico.

Included on the EMPRESS OF ASIA was a party of 68 non-commissioned officers from British posts in the Far East, led by Lieutenant P. R. Hemens of the Royal Artillery.  The group included members of Royal Scots, Seaforth Highlanders, East Surreys, Middlesex and the Durham Light Infantry.  The group was to travelling to Quebec and then to Southampton aboard the EMPRESS OF BRITAIN.
